Five percent of the island is estimated to be lost in 2022 Kepri

Batam (ANTARA News) - Five percent of the 2408 islands in the Riau Islands province is estimated to be lost by 2022 as climate change, according to marine scientist Eddywan Saturday.

"Estimates by experts, in the 10 years five percent of the 2408 islands in the Riau Islands will be lost," said the winner of the degree of Doctor of Science from Boston University Marine United States.

He said climate change-induced global warming causing polar ice to melt, thus increasing the volume of sea water and drown some islands in the Riau Islands.

He said to prevent the loss of the island, the government and society must work together to reduce ocean currents, such as by carrying out reforestation on the beach.

Communities also need to care for natural resources do not lead to over-exploitation of damaged ecosystems.

He also reminded the reclamation is done without considerations of environmental aspects will lead to abrasion. Reclamation can eliminate animal ecosystem functioning of coral reef supports to keep it sturdy.

If the animal dead coral, coral islands that form will be damaged and fragile. Conditions of weak rock holds the potential vanish. Islands are easily destroyed and strong ocean winds and strong tides, he said.
